Baby sleep in summer: how to help them sleep despite the heat and daylight?
Share
Summer is finally here! While this season is synonymous with holidays and long sunny days, it often rhymes with headaches for parents. Between rising temperatures and daylight that persists until 9 or 10 PM, baby's sleep in summer can be seriously disrupted.
How can you help your child fall asleep peacefully when it's still bright outside? How can you adapt their room to the heat? Discover our practical tips for calm summer nights.
1. Cheat with light to signal bedtime
The main trap in summer is brightness. Biologically, the sleep hormone (melatonin) needs darkness to be secreted. When it's daytime at bedtime, baby's brain receives the opposite message: "it's playtime!"
- Create a false twilight: Close the shutters or blackout curtains in their room about 30 minutes before bedtime to plunge the room into semi-darkness while you read a story.
- Use dim lighting: To avoid too abrupt a transition between the brightly lit living room and complete darkness, turn on a night light emitting a warm glow. This small lamp visually tells your child that the sleep ritual is beginning, regardless of the outdoor brightness.
2. Keep baby's room cool: the right habits
The ideal temperature for a baby's room is between 18°C and 20°C. During periods of high heat or heatwave, this threshold is quickly exceeded. Here's how to minimize the damage:
- The curtain game: Keep windows and shutters closed all day to block out the heat. Open them wide in the evening and early morning to circulate cool air.
- Dress baby lightly: A simple short-sleeved cotton bodysuit or a light summer sleeping bag is more than enough.
3. Maintain the bedtime routine, even on holiday
In summer, routines tend to shift (later meals, evening strolls). If you move around or change environments, baby can lose their bearings, which exacerbates difficulties falling asleep.
To reassure them, keep the same steps in the same order: bath (which also helps lower their body temperature), cuddle, and turning on their favourite night light. Bringing a familiar reference from their room is essential.
This is where a wireless, rechargeable night light becomes your best summer ally: portable, this small light slips into your travel bag and instantly recreates their comforting cocoon, whether you're sleeping in a hotel, camping, or at grandparents' house.
4. The Lampimou trick: the timer against night awakenings
Heat often causes micro-awakenings during the night. If baby wakes up in complete darkness in a too-warm room, they might panic.
To help them without leaving a light source active all night (which would block their deep sleep), use the timer function of our night lights. It will automatically turn off after 15, 30, or 60 minutes, once your little treasure is fast asleep.

Extra tip: If baby wakes up due to thirst or heat in the middle of the night, a simple tap on the silicone night light will allow you to instantly turn it on with a soft glow to give them a drink, without straining their little eyes or fully waking them up.
